What did you learn in school today?
I don't know about you, but my school taught me to memorise yet neglected to teach me about the world, about happiness, about people. My school taught me to pass tests yet gave me no indication of how I can be successful in life. My school taught me to sit quietly and raise my hand when I want to speak, yet presented me with no encouragement to stand up and speak out for what I believe in.
So then why do we go to school?
We go to school to earn a stamp above our heads which deems us as respectable and hireable. We go to school so we can slot ourselves into the flow of humankind which brainwashes people into spending valuable years of their life memorising futile information only to continue the rest of their lives doing exactly the same.
We have been indoctrinated into giving up our most infinitely valuable possession; our time, in order to gain a temporary substance; money.
It may sound absurd but money isn't real. It has no value. When you come home from work each day at an office you gain nothing, but a invisible number put into your bank.
But I digress.
Schools teach children to suppress their creativity and individuality. Although your teacher might harmlessly say "Just write it down because it's on the mark scheme" , what a lot of people don't realise is that this subconsciously teaches us to conform to society's beliefs. It discretely diminishes our own big, fat, juicy opinions and ideas.
In school, maths and science are valued above all else. Careers in subjects like art and music are considered..."unstable".
And yes I agree that our world would be in bits without our progression in science and technology but if great artists, musicians, play wrights, authors, athletes and preachers did not exist, then our world would be a bleek and miserable place. We would be living in a black and white earth. Depression would reign.
You see, although science can change lives, quite often art and music are a more powerful drug than any.
The arts are in everything, from the shoes on your feet to the room around you.
Who decided that a person who can memorise pages of information is more intelligent than someone who cannot, yet has a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Don't let your mental capabIlities and creativity become suppressed by someone else's idea of intelligence.
You are not a robot.
Don't be fooled. Twenty years of education does not mean you are educated. Want to be educated? Go out and educate yourself. Meet people. See things. Write down your thoughts and ideas. Travel across the world. Read books. Learn foreign languages. Take in your surroundings. Listen and see other poeple's perspectives. Learn new crafts.
Don't allow them to judge your amazing mind by a test. Don't allow them to label it with a grade. Your mind is powerful and wonderful and brilliant. A poor grade will never change that.
